Psychiatric News has a story about an article published in the British Medical Journal concerning length of deployments and psychiatric morbidity:

Americans often hear about the psychological demands on U.S. soldiers, whose tours of duty in Iraq have been extended from 12 to 15 months. They are not alone. New research shows that longer tours of duty appear to take their toll on troops from other countries too, according to an ongoing study of British forces by the King's Centre for Military Health Research at King's College London.

Military Times is running a story about TBI in the VA:

About 6 percent of Afghanistan and Iraq war veterans seeking treatment at Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals have been diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries, according to preliminary data released Friday.

A VA mandatory screening program that took effect in April has looked at 61,285 veterans of the wars. Of those, 19.2 percent were identified on the screening questionnaire as potentially suffering from traumatic brain injuries and were referred for more tests.

The bill is targeted at the VA medical system. It mandates mental health screenings, staff education, designation of suicide prevention counselors, a peer support counseling program and research. The bill also directs that outreach and education can be conducted for Veterans and Families.

Milliken et al compares the results of the post-deployment health assessment (PDHA) and the post-deployment health re-assessment (PDHRA) of roughly 100,000 soldiers in a paper published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
