General Medical Officer (GMO)

GMO's are the civilian counterpart to the general practitioner (GP). They have completed internship and are licensed. They are primary care physicians for operational units. When their unit deploys the GMO deploys too. GMO's make more money then interns or residents because they receive the ASP (Additional Special Pay) annual bonus. Please visit the Pay page for more information about medical officer bonuses.

GMO's provide primary care to active duty service members and sometimes dependents. The GMO acts as a gatekeeper for higher levels of care. They are responsible for maintaining the health and readiness of their unit to include assuring immunizations and routine exams are up to date. They have an important leadership role because they advise their command on medical issues and sometimes act as medical department head.

There are subspecialist GMO's such as Flight Surgeons who act as primary care providers for pilots. Similiarly, a Dive Medical Officer provides medical care for submarine personnel. GMO's also deploy with Marine units as battalion surgeons.

Is GMO a Rule?

I am in the Army and I didn't have any GMO tour, I am in an anesthesia residency in the Army after I graduated from the HPSP. The only residents I know who were GMOs were in the Navy. No one that was HPSP with me were GMOs. Are you implying that all HPSPs serve as GMOs or just the ones in the Navy? The reason I am asking is because I don't think most of the non military types realize there are differences in the services and you are quoting GMO like all the services have mandatory GMO time. If I am mistaken please correct me. I do not want to assume anything.

If I understand you

If I understand you correctly, you are suggesting that there is a difference in the % of interns who are required to complete GMO tours. In the Navy I think it is around 40-50%. Not sure what it is in the other services. It would be nice if each branch released a detailed matching report with the numbers for transparency and to allow for comparison.

Hey Galo
