Involuntary separation from military
If an intern or resident is given extra time beyond the normal year to complete an internship or residency year and does not succeed in making up the failed or missed rotations during that extra time, will the military move to separate him from the service or force that doctor to serve in some non-medical capacity his remaining years of obligation? If the above situation were to ensue, would that intern or resident have any choice as to whether to leave the military or serve his obligation in some other role and unit? Or would any other options be offered?
I guess I'm looking at the glass half-empty, pessimistic view at the moment, considering the worst case scenario. Thanks for the help.

Post 9/11 GI Bill and Residency
Hello all,
I exhausted my Ch 30 MGIB and received 12 months of Post 9/11 GI Bill of which I used 10 months before graduating medical school. I thought I recalled something in the benefit program that mentioned paying out benefits to resident physicians. Anyone have any experience with this? It is only 2 months worth but every little bit helps.

Potential Internship/Residency Interruption
For the internship and residency years, how much flexibility (if any) is allowed for completing each year's curriculum/rotations? If illness,
repeating a rotation or some other unforeseen event intervenes to delay completion of an internship or residency year, will the military work
with that resident to make up the gap? Is an interruption such as above fairly rare? I'm assuming the entire year would not have to be repeated?

Program info
Hi all,
Is there any one here knows Camp Pendleton by chance..
I am looking some info. about the FP program like: Quality comparing FP programs in other Navy location, location/housing in the area vs. other navy location, other pros. or cons.
I also wondering if you have any advice you have for FP program in the Navy in general. I am trying to apply residency to one of the program sites but I have never been to any of them before.
Thank you

Can someone clarify if step 2 CS is also part of the Oct 15th deadline? or can you take that at the end of your senior year?
Thanks!

Germany
What would a board certified doctor need to do to get assigned to a base in Germany? Are there any specialties that have more presence than others? As I understand when you finish residency in the army you first do a utilization tour anywhere the army needs you. But after that would you be able to pick your location? Also as I understand the navy has no bases in germany. Is there some way for a navy doctor to get assigned to an army hospital (in germany)? Thank you.
Private Loans
I have been accepted to the Post-Bacc program at USUHS this year. I need to find a private loan to help support my family for the year. Does anyone know of anyone who does student loans for USUHS?
Post-9/11 GI Bill
I just recently discovered this and wanted to share with all.
A servicemember (enlisted or officer) is eligible to TRANSFER HIS/HER BENEFITS from the post-9/11 GI Bill if he/she has a) served at least 6 years of active duty after 9/11 and b) agrees to serve at least 4 more years. These 4 years can be served CONCURRENTLY (NOT CONSECUTIVELY) with an HPSP or USUHS obligation but NOT ROTC or Academy obligation (this would be served CONSECUTIVELY); therefore USUHS grads can take advantage of this while incurring NO ADDITIONAL obligation and HPSP grads from the primary care specialties will incur only 3 additional years in the reserves. Those HPSP grads doing 5 year residencies will incur NO ADDITIONAL TIME. I have confirmed this statement with my branch manager at the HRC.
This is potentially a HUGE financial windfall as many private institutions (i.e. Ivy League schools) are participating in the yellow ribbon program which "makes up" the difference b/t their tuition and that of the most expensive public school in the state. The post-9/11 GI Bill will cover 36 months of tutition at the most expensive public school in the state as well as housing (BAH of an E5).
For those of us in medical specialties where we are being financially devastated by the military, this benefit as well as moonlighting may make life more palatable until our ADSOs end.

Army Air Force Family Monetary Fund?
My PD mentioned something about some type of fund that would provide a 0% loan up to $5000 spread over 12 months or something like that. I've been trying to look it up to get more information but I cannot recall the actual name of what I'm trying to find. I've contacted my PD but have yet to hear back from him, and probably won't since it's the weekend.
Does anyone have any idea what he's talking about?

Joining reserves at same time as application to med school
I'm in the process of applying right now for the second time, but was thinking about also joining the reserves, probably as a Marine Reserve Officer. Why? Well, 1) I've been having a hard time finding a good job for the glide year, 2) it's something I've wanted to do for as long as I can remember, and 3) I'm 27 now and will soon be too old to sign up.
I've done a few hours of surfing the web and I know to basics what goes into joining the reserves, but I was wondering if anyone here knows what would happen if I became a reservist and then got into medical school. Would my obligations as a reservist continue, without any changes whatsoever? Or would they be "put on hold" while I'm in school, and then resume when I finish residency? Would medical schools still take me, knowing that I could be called up?
Also, if I got in to USUHPS, what is the likelihood that my commanding officer in the reserves would release me to attend medical school there?

ARMY: HIV test for OBLC, ADT away rotation
Hey all. I'm going to basic as well as an away rotation later this summer. On both of my order sets, they request a HIV test at DOD facility within 48 hours of reporting for duty, with results sent to AHR-SG-H within 29 days.
I was wondering how other members of this site have arranged or disregarded this. (also on my order set for ADT, it states that I need PT gear and take an APFT although I know this doesn't happen).
Thanks for the help.

Additional Specialty Pay (ASP or MASP)
So, I'm finishing my civi sponsored residency, but continuing on into fellowship. I'll be eligible for the additional specialty pay bonus of 15k starting next month, but do I have to apply for it? If so, does anyone know which form I have to fill out? Thanks for any help.
ODS dilema
I tried to search the forum but couldn't find much info to help resolve my dilema.
I'm going to be a MS IV this coming fall and will apply for IM in the Navy. Due to unforeseen circumstance, I have not able to do my ODS. I'm trying to decide whether I should wait to do it after graduation or before? What would the advantage and disadvantage would be? Do you happen to know anyone who went to ODS after graduation and still get pick to go straight thru for IM residency? Would it hurt my chance of getting an acceptance to one of the internship program if I'm not done with ODS by starting date of internship? How flexible is the program regarding this? Thank you so much for your advice. I emailed many people but did not get a good answer.

Military Medicine / Family Life
In your opinions, what branch of military medicine is best suited for a doctor with a close family?

Hello
I am in the process of starting a civilian residency program (IM program), but realized, many of you, have so much student debts, both private and federal student loans.
Unfortunately, the program I am starting does not pay well in terms of salary. Hence, I have been talking to this Navy Health Professional Recruiter and he noted that I can sign up a contract, which would allow me to receive monthly stipend and will get 40k after my first year (he called it "1 year anniversary bonus"). In return, after my IM program, I was told that I have to commit at least 4 years in the Navy. I have not signed anything yet, but submitted my resume and residency training award letter.
I guess my question is, does this worth it? I have very little or no knowledge about this program. I was informed of loan repayment program, which I am interested. How difficult is to get in IM fellowship program in the Navy, such as Cardiology or GI or Hem/Onc? I am really hoping to get some advice.

AD MD Remote/humanitarian/other tours
How easy/hard is it for active duty MDs to do remote tours, humanitarian tours, or other types that you may go for 3 mos to a year (or however long it would be) and to work in countries say in Africa/South America/etc? How long after you are on active duty are you allowed to do these? Would it be after residency as well?
Are these things you can do during a summer if you were an USUHS student or HPSP?
Thanks!

Gmo
I think around 250 HPSP students will graduate each year and 90% will do GMO in order to increase their chance and also to be considered for PGY-2 positions especially RAD, Ortho, and Derm. So, for an average student what is the advantage of doing GMO in the first place? In my understanding there are only few PGY-2 positions and majority will apply for these limited positions. It is really doesn't give sense to do GMO unless you have high stat (GPA, research, USMLE/COMLEX).
Any feedback please

Sign-on bonus timeline
I will be commissioned into the Army for the HPSP later this month. Does anyone know how long after commissioning does one receive the sign on bonus? I know I won't start receiving the monthly stipend until October, but I am trying to figure out finances for the next 3 months. Any response would be appreciated.
Thanks

HPSP for the Navy? Years of service and location abroad
I was wondering if anyone would be able to speak on the years of service that is due to the military (navy in particular - but am open to hearing about others). My concerns are with regards to placement and possibly becoming relocated abroad -- how much say do we have in these placements? Also I read somewhere that you can be subject to one year of general practice on top of the years of commitment. Any input would be great!
STRAP HPLR etc....
So the info I have received so far is that if you take STRAP and HPLR you would get upto 3 loan payments during residency then at the end of your residency you have to pay ALL of your time back for STRAP plus earn a good year BEFORE your 4th loan payment.
Now for Family Med this would be 7 YEARS (3*2years for STRAP + 1 good year). Thats a LONG time to have to pay your loan out of pocket for being involved in a loan repayment program
anyone with any experience with these programs???
