HPSP and gaining weight
A thought crossed my mind and was wondering if any of you have experienced this or heard of it happening. You join the HPSP program all fit, but during your four years at medical school, you gain 50+ pounds  . Now, would someone still be useable in the military's eye? What exactly would happen if this occurred?
Flight Surgeon Questions and Military Payoff
I have a few questions:
1) I have always wanted to serve my country, be a doctor, and earn my pilots license. So, if I choose to apply and get accepted into a FS program, can I use those flight hours and instructional time to get my Private Pilot's License? I know it may be a stupid question, but learning to fly has always been a goal of mine.
2) How often are flight surgeons deployed? How long are their deployments? I know this is different for Operational and Claimency (sp) tours, but what is the difference?
3) Okay, assuming I do the FS GMO tour... If I get the 4 year scholarship. I will do the internship year (which I have read does not count toward time repayment) then go to Flight Surgeon school, and do two years of FS service. Would I be in a good spot to get a general surgery residency (5 years)? Also, how many years would I owe after the residency (4 or 5)? Do these years add onto my 4 years earlier (internship plus 3 years of FS) when it comes to calculating retirement? (I assume the 5 years of residency do not count toward retirement.
4) Last question... How does the ranking and promotion system work? Would I be a commissioned officer during medical school (what rank)? And what is the promotion schedule after medical school.
***Some of these question may seem stupid, but I cannot reach an officer recruiter by phone or email for some reason.
Thanks.

Potential Deployment Locations for National Guard
I can't be deployed for several years, but when the time comes I'm planning on volunteering for deployment, just to better plan the timing and perhaps the location. Being a Guardsman, what are the potential locations of deployment? I know Army Reserves can be deployed to Iraq, the Stan, Europe and North America, etc. Basically, anywhere there is a US troop presence. Lets say I could volunteer for deployment right now, what are my options outside of Iraq, Afghanistan and US disaster relief sites? Can I deploy to another state (Alaska, Hawaii)? Can I deploy to Europe? Japan? Korea? Thanks...
HPSP questions?
I am currently on HPSP scholarship and this summer I attended ODS (Officer Development School) and would be happy to answer any questions that anyone might have about the scholarship or the training experience.
Is GMO mandatory?
I'm interested in HPSP or USUHS and joining the Navy to serve my country and patch some soldiers up. I have searched around but haven't found any current (closest I found was this thread started 6 years ago: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=112867) information regarding if GMO tours were still standard practice.
Spending a few years as a GMO and delaying residency does not sound terribly exciting to me.
I recently spoke to a Navy Doc that specialized in tropical infections and she had said that it was unlikely to have to serve a GMO tour. Does anyone know anything contrary to this?
Thanks in advance.

AF HPSP Bonus
Has anyone started receiving their 20k bonus yet? I think they need to change the name from "signing bonus" to "signing plus 8 months or so bonus" lol.
ASP bonuse while at ODS
Will be starting active duty shortly but first am doing ODS. Am I able to receive my ASP bonus while at ODS, and what sort of paperwork do I have to arrange and through who? THanks in advance
AFHPSP Book Reimbursement
Does anyone on AF HPSP have experience submitting reimbursement forms for Med school books? Do they need the original receipt, or just a copy? Any other tips/tricks? Does it really take 12 weeks?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.
Seeking Advice: Prior Military, GMO and retire or residency
I have about 14 years of prior service and considering Navy HSCP (active duty). Since I'd be active duty during med school, I'd have about 18 years in when I graduate. Should I:
1. serve my 4 years payback as a GMO, retire with 22 years and seek a civilian residency? or
2. finish med school (18 years), do an intern year (19), do a 3/4 year residency (23), payback 4 years (27 years), and then retire?
I enjoy military service/life...as a line officer at least, but I want to weigh the options.
any advice is appreciated.

AF General Surgery Match
Does anyone out there have experience or personal knowledge of this past year's match in general surgery? I'm particularly interested in how many applicants there were and how many matched categorical. Also, is there a lot of competition from returning GMO/FS applicants?
I'm just trying to gauge where I need to be for next year's applications and if I need to get some research in.

Army HPSP and Residency Options
Hi,
I'm currently a medical student who is debating about whether to sign up for the Army HPSP program. In particular, I am trying to decide whether the HPSP is for me or if I should just continue in the civilian field and apply to the FAP later. Both myself and my family value service to our country, but I am concerned about the quality of my training and some other things.
1) Does everyone have to do the Army FYGME (PGY-1) training program? If I stayed in the civilian field, I would be able to match directly into a pathology program straight from medical school. Would joining the Army essentially add 1 year onto my post-graduate education prior to my four-year residency?
2) Are the military residencies and training comparable to civilian residencies and training? In pathology, I'd be matching to SAUSHEC, MAMC, or NCC. I am concerned about not just the number of specimens (pathology talk, no I didn't mean patients) I'd see, but also the diversity of specimens. I am also a little concerned about the amount of red tape I'd encounter as well as the condition of equipment in the lab.
3) Where could I be stationed after training? I know this is a really broad question, but I have no idea how many Army installations (aside from the three mentioned before) would have a path lab on hand or where they would be located. I am prepared to be deployed (although I wouldn't know why) if I needed to be.
Thank you for any insight. Even if it is not directly related to pathology. Oh, and please refrain from talking about money. I've done all the calculations and I know what I'd stand to gain and lose on that front. It's a question of getting the training to be the best doctor I could be that is the main issue here.

Being able to start a family?
I am a senior undergraduate and am applying to medical schools right now. I am considering applying for the HPSP. I haven't been able to find much information on what family life would be like in this situation. I am hoping to get married in the next couple of years and this is a big factor in my decision on whether or not to go through with it. Can anyone give me some opinions or experiences regarding this? TIA
Army Reserve deployment/ mobilization frequency
I was wondering if anyone could give me any information on Army Reservist physician deployment/ mobilization frequency and length - particularly in emergency medicine. I am an Army veteran who is seriously considering going back in as an EM doc in the reserves. If anyone could give me any info on how often we are deploying/ mobilizing, what is the max, are we backfilling or deploying more, etc - it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Gsacep
Has anyone been to or going to the GSACEP reception at the ACEP research forum. This year it is in Las Vegas Sept. 29.
The reason I am asking is because I am a medical student and I am presenting at the ACEP research forum. I e-mailed some the EM PD's to see if they would be at the residency fair, but they said they would be at the reception and I should go. I wanted to know what to wear, etc.
I will also post this in the emergency medicine forum, but since the GS is for military I thought I would try here.
Thanks so much.

Navy Application
I submitted my commission application, still gathering a few references for the credential applicaton. I did the on-line security questions (NASIS). Now, what can I expect from the process?? Now, my recruiter explained to me that I do a GMO tour, if any family medicine (specialty interested) opens up, I will be applying for it. I was NOT on any scholarship. I am applying as a civilian MD.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Guard funding for journal subscriptions, books, etc
Wondering if there are any programs or avenues of obtaining funding/reimbursement for journal subscriptions and/or the volumes of books we read as residents.
Already in. Not taking GI Bill.
Does $2500 CME cover anything like this?

getting into residency advice
I had everything figured out when it came to rotations and my residency of choice. I want to do Psych at Tripler, and I have my rotation soon. However, my school recently informed me that an agreement between them and Tripler has not been signed, and if it doesn't get signed I won't receive credit for my time. The clerkship coordinator has all but said she has too much other stuff to do, so she probably won't be able to get it signed. Anyways, I'm wondering if I should go ahead with my rotation and use my 4 weeks of vacation for it or should I do a clerkship elsewhere and still apply to Tripler for residency.
Living near Wilford Hall
I'm likely going to be assigned to Wilford Hall after finishing fellowship. I'm looking at places to live, and was thinking about buying a little property on Lake Medina or the Medina River. I know it's 30+ miles away, but I used to live in San Antonio and got pretty sick of the cookie cutter subdivisions, though it didn't seem to phase many others.
Anybody else live in the Lakehills/Mico or Castroville areas? Does anybody live anywhere besides Stone Oak or the Sea World area?

MCAT for HPSP?
I have been accepted into my first choice medical school through a BS/MD Program; I do not have to take the MCAT in order to attend. Lucky I know. My question is this: Is the MCAT a requirement in order to receive the Navy HPSP scholarship? If so, what is the average MCAT score for scholarship recipients? Thanks a lot.
Military scholarship or massive debt??? Pros and cons.
I am a first year medical student considering applying for the Air Force Health Scholarship. I would like to hear from someone who actually has experience in this...not a recruiter who is paid to make it sound wonderful.
I know the pay isn't as good but I am thinking the chance of getting a residency match will be greater through the military...am I wrong? Also, the thought of being almost $300k in debt is a bit scary especially when you see that it will be $600k by the time it is paid off.
On the other hand though, if I will be able to pay that off in less time than I would have to give Uncle Sam, would it be worth it?
Also wondering what chance there is for getting to have the residency you want? My first choice at the moment would be Radiological Oncology or somewhere in that field.
Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!
