ADHD and the Military

Sat, 07/10/2010 - 20:32
So my doctor thinks I have ADHD and wants me to go in for further screening and to determine whatever treatment I may need.

I saw on another thread that ADHD would disqualify me from becoming a flight doctor, which I'm not really interested in.

Would it have any other negative impact?

Basically I'm trying to figure out whether it would be more beneficial for me to have it treated/diagnosed (get work done in a more timely manner, be able to study better) or to just work through it myself as I have been for the past few years (I've pretty much always had a 3.5 which is decent).

I don't think I need and I would never want any special accommodations in school, if that makes a difference.

Tricare Benefit in UA Status?

Sat, 07/10/2010 - 20:18
Question for those who might know:

I was called this weekend by a civilian facility in another state for a referral for admission on a service member who has been in unauthorized absence status for the last three weeks (and continues to be). While this facility is a Tricare-authorized provider, there is not much military in the area, and I got the impression they rarely take Tricare patients.

I advised them that I would be happy to place the referral, but that I was not sure they would get paid, as the patient was actively UA. They decided to look into this issue further, and I'm getting the impression he's not going to be admitted.

I spent an hour going through the Tricare website, but couldn't find an answer. I emailed an inquiry to Tricare, but their customer service office doesn't open again until Monday. I checked with some more experienced physicians in my command, but they were not sure either.

Anyone know for a fact the answer to this?

Navy Deferments for 2011?

Sat, 07/10/2010 - 15:55
Does anyone know where a list could be found that has potential Navy deferments for 2011 residency spots? We've gotten a list of anticipated Navy residency numbers, but nothing regarding deferment spots.

Straight talk about ARMY surgery

Sat, 07/10/2010 - 01:50
Ok, I've read enough on this website to realize most of you are either delerious or just don't know what you are talking about when it comes to army surgical programs. I'm in one now and rotated at another 3 for 6 weeks each when I was a med student.
First off, if you are a potential medical student and want to do surgery and are interested in the HPSP program, STAY AWAY FROM THE ARMY...STAY SO FAR AWAY!
With the exception of WRAMC, BAMC, and Madigan, the other 3 are aweful compared to civilian programs in terms of case load(not even close), experience, and competency out of residency. You have 2-3 pts on a team on service most times and most of them are "rocks" that in the civilian world, you could ship out somewhere else. it sucks and everyday is like ground hog day. My other fellow residents in the civ world perform lap appys as interns and lap choles and early 2nd yrs. I havent done either and im a freakin 2nd yr. I regret it everyday of my life. The training sucks and if i had it to do over, I'd train civilian and go back to the army to serve my damn country because thats all i want to do. period. Not train in a ****ty program that you dont get any experience and the attendings aren't letting you get experience. oh trust me, you'll be an expert at fixing umbilical hernias, but your SICU rotation will have 1-2 pts that arent really even sick..just ther because the floor nurses are retards.
Oh, and all the surg programs are pyramid programs so if you dont get picked up, seeya in the middle east next yr unless you want to chabge to something dreadful like FP or IM...I rather die than deal with mundane problems all day like back pain and DM. I have high aspirations for myself and if could get out of this hell hole, I would.
Please, god. Don't listen to the recruiters. None of them know what they are talking about. Train civilian and come back to the armed forces. It will help your career and make you an excellant surgeon instead of a mediocre one. The decision is yours and do not end up like me.

Residency while serving

Fri, 07/09/2010 - 19:43
Is it possible to enter the military as an FM doc and then enter a military residency while serving?

Another ranking question

Fri, 07/09/2010 - 18:01
Just a quick question:

Is this ranking acceptable?

1. Radiaton oncology---DEF
2. FM----------CA
3. FM---------FL
4. FM---------WA
5. FM---------As assigned

The form do not allow me to choose a training site for # 5..it is automatically changed to "As assigned". It works when I put all 5 FM.. the problem is when I change # 1

Other question: where do I get the list of full deferment available for next year?(for Navy)

Thank you

HPSP Contract

Fri, 07/09/2010 - 15:18
Does anyone have information on any legal firms that have experience with HPSP?

Northeast/NY higly preferred. I tried looking for myself, but most claiming to have UCMJ experience know very little of the program.

Scope of Practice in the military?

Thu, 07/08/2010 - 09:24
Hello, who gets more training in the following procedures in the military: colonoscopy, interpreting ekg, exercise stress tests, IM or FM residents? I read in previous threads that it was FM, but it seems counterintuitive. So how would it work on a base where they compete for patients, like Hawaii?
How about post-residency in the military. Do either FM or IM get to do exercise stress tests in their office? Or it is reserved for specialists?
Also, are there more billets for IM or FM to go to Germany?

Also a question for navy: are there any assignments post-residency for FM or IM that are unique to navy? Can either of them spend an entire tour on a ship?
Thanks!

Disqualifying Medical Condition?

Wed, 07/07/2010 - 17:27
First off, I wanted to say thank to everyone that posts on this forumn. It's been extremely helpful in deciding whether to apply for HPSP or not. So I have a question about disqualifying conditions. Does anyone know if a breast reduction is disqualifying? Also, if anyone has a link for the site that list all the conditions, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Joining the air force post residency

Wed, 07/07/2010 - 01:57
My fiance was a former airforce hpsp student and now doing a civilian residency. She's a internal medicine intern and I am currently a PGY3 gen surg resident. I don't have any commitment to the airforce and I have minimal loans.

Obviously I'd like to be with her, and I was considering joining the airforce so we could be together for the time she has to serve.

1. My question is that, is there any guarantee that they would keep us together?
2. Is it at all possible for me to serve to fulfill part of her contract at all? So that she would only have to serve on active duty for 2 years?
3. Anyone know of any married military physicians who can share their experience?

Obviously, I havent talked to anyone about it, including my fiance, but Ive been entertaining this idea for the past couple weeks.

Family medicine in the air force

Tue, 07/06/2010 - 21:28
What is the typical work schedule for a Family Practitioner (M.D.) in the Air Force?

Will HPSP cover concurrent MPH degree with MD?

Tue, 07/06/2010 - 15:33
Tulane has a masters of public health degree that 40% of the MD students concurrently earn with their medical degree. Will HPSP cover this, so long as I payback the time? Does it depend on branch of service?

Staff bonus schedule?

Mon, 07/05/2010 - 19:27
im sure this has prob been talked about in the past but ive looked and cant find a concise thread, anyway

can any of the military staff physicians lay out for me the bonus structure when you finish residency
ie what are the bonuses and when do you get them?
thanks

help with clerkships

Mon, 07/05/2010 - 18:27
I am starting MSIV and doing my two Navy rotations in the next couple months and I haven't been to ODS yet. I've already resigned myself to the fact that I'll get yelled at along the way for not saluting the right person, etc. but could anyone point me in the right direction of some ground rules for that sort of thing? I already found info on how to wear the uniform, but any help would be greatly appreciated, especially since my first rotation will be with Marines, so I'd like to put a little effort into learning the rank structure for Navy and Marines. Any other tips would be awesome. Thanks.

Any one knows camp pendleton

Mon, 07/05/2010 - 07:23
Is there any one here know camp pendleton please. I want to do FP internship in Florida or camp pendleton but I can't get any information about camp pendleton to compare with Floride. So, if you have any info about the the area and quality of the program, please please give some feed back.

Thank you

Do people do this/is this wise?

Mon, 07/05/2010 - 03:42
Let me start off by saying I'm already in HPSP, have no idea what specialty I want to do, and want to be a military doc regardless of whether or not this holds true.

So, I was noticing that the military match seems a lot easier than civilian match when it comes to specialties. For example, ortho didn't even fill up last year, and all the ROAD specialties are a bit easier to get into than in the civilian world. So what I was wondering if it's prudent to do HPSP for say...2 years to get access to military match and match into one of these competitive specialties, enjoy a residency of higher pay, skip out of two years of paying for school + stipend + bonus, do your two years of lower-paid attending work, and head to the civilian world as a licensed derm/ortho/rad or whatever?

I know that folks say don't do the military for money, but when you take into account the access to these residencies that appear more available for competitive specialties, it almost seems like it makes sense to.

Any thoughts?

Wounded Warriors with PTSD.....

Mon, 07/05/2010 - 01:31
Posting this to let community members know about a FREE resource for Veterans and military mental health professionals who treat them. OIF/OEF Veterans or providers can download a 200 page Cognitive Behavioral Therapy manual for Combat related PTSD. The manual is in use at several military treatment sites and can be downloaded at www.war-related-ptsd.com.

The treatment manual covers several evidence based treatments, such as Cognitive therapy, Exposure therapy, and various relaxation techniques. Cognitive therapy and Exposure therapy were designated by a DoD/Veterans Affairs panel as being the most effective for PTSD.

The manual can be used to learn about PTSD and was designed to be used with a provider who can guide Veterans through the exercises proven to help reduce or eliminate PTSD.

The manual has several additional Modules, each addressing an aspect of War-related PTSD that our Veterans face, such as:Appendix A: Additional Modules
Module 1: Relaxation Techniques
Module 2: Improving Sleep
Module 3: Managing Anger
Module 4: Managing Dissociation & Re-experiencing Symptoms
Module 5: Managing Guilt
Module 6: Alcohol and PTSD
Module 7: Medications for PTSD
Module 8: Other Types of Treatment
I hope this information is helpful. If you are a Psychiatrist / Psychologist or LCSW treating Service members or Veterans please visit the site and look over the manual.

If you know a Veteran struggling with PTSD please share the link to the free treatment manual: www.war-related-ptsd.com.

So I'm Leaving In a Couple Wks...

Sun, 07/04/2010 - 12:46
I'm leaving for ODS in a couple weeks (couldn't work it in before now), but I've been very busy trying to wrap up third year stuff, so I've done basically nothing to prepare. Any quick hits on things I should be doing in the next 2 weeks?

Interested in FS/RAM

Sun, 07/04/2010 - 07:34
I've read through the first 50 pages of relevant topics and still have some questions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've been thinking of going Navy for RAM and FS, with IM intern and EM residency. I'm an MD/MBA but only have a 204 Step 1, no research but I have my single engine land rating and working on my rotocraft rating.

1. Given scores, any realistic chances of matching that whole plan? What about getting intern and billet in San Diego? (I'm a SoCal guy who surfs, girlfriend doesn't want to leave yet, and will soon work as an air marshal. I don't mind deploying, just as long as we're stationed there).

2. Is HPLRP or any other financial program available when I commission into military residency? I financed my education only through loans/grants.

3. Was interested in getting my masters in aerospace engineering for general self interest and was looking at distance ed through Naval Postgraduate School. My alumni USC has almost every engineering masters through distance education as well. Anyone had some experience doing this or getting funding?

4. Is there a way to transition to a research role down the line for aerospace med? I noticed there was a job on the navy website for aerospace physiology under medical sciences. Air Force seems to offer specific jobs as a research scientist or engineer.

Thanks for any help. If there is anyone who wouldn't mind talking to me or letting me PM them that would be great too.
Just a little extra background. I did my MBA because I got burnt out during third year and was contemplating leaving medicine before I learned about what milmed had to offer. Needless to say I'm a little lost in where I want my life to go and there are no good mentors at my school UCLA for this type of stuff. I scuba and did a hyperbaric rotation under a pulm/CC attending which was great fun, but not exactly DMO. I'm hestitant to contact a recruiter just yet as I did so for the academy's and HSCP back in high school and got phone calls weekly for months.

Joining between college and med school?

Sun, 07/04/2010 - 03:36
I've been toying with the idea of joining the military after graduating college and before medical school. I know about inactive reserves, but will being in medical school prevent one from everyone being called up?
