NCC IM/FP & Psych Combined Residency

Sun, 03/14/2010 - 04:04
I'm curious if there are any residents currently in the National Capital Consortium's Combined IM/Psych or FM/Psych Residency, or any graduates of the same program(s). I am curious as to the possible career tracks one can take with dual board certification, especially in the Navy.

Clerkship question

Sun, 03/14/2010 - 03:42
Question about Navy clerkships: can I split up my 6 weeks of AT time for a fiscal year to do multiple ATs? My situation:

I want to do a family medicine clerkship with the Navy. Unfortunately I would need to do this begining in September, and it's a 6 week clerkship, so I'd overrun the fiscal year by 2 weeks. Can I use 30 days of my 2010 AT time, and combine it with 2 weeks of my 2011 AT time, while still allowing myself 30 days of time to do another clerkship late in 3rd year? Alternatively, can I do 6 weeks there, but 2 of them as a civilian?

Military (Navy) Combined Med-Peds

Sun, 03/14/2010 - 01:03
I am a first year osteopathic medical student on Navy HPSP. I am interested in (maybe) doing a combined med-peds residency down the road, but military GME does not offer such a combined program. Are there any military docs out there who are board-certified in both medicine and peds? I'm wondering if it's possible to "tailor" my Navy GME training by doing a transitional internship, then trying to do Med and Peds residencies back-to-back. Any thoughts or comments are welcome!

Motorcycle regs

Sun, 03/14/2010 - 00:38
Can anyone help out an ignorant HPSPer? I'll be starting my intern year in June and I'm planning on riding my motorcycle to and from the hospital. Does the Army have a bunch of rules that I'm going to have to worry about? Do I have to do any extra training classes, etc? And I'm assuming it's okay to ride in uniform, assuming I don't have to wear my beret if I'm wearing a helmet, and I'm wondering if there's some kind of extra reflective stuff I have to wear like I saw people on bikes wearing.
Anyone know where I can find the official word on this stuff? Thanks!

EM Rotation at Wright-Patt (AF)

Sat, 03/13/2010 - 23:16
So in July I'm doing my "audition" rotation for the Air Force residency program at Wright-Patt, my number one choice. Then I'm taking the board exams, COMLEX and USMLE, in the middle of August.

Does anyone know how many hours per week you work on this rotation? Either way, I'll be using all my free time to study for Step II, but I'm just curious how much free time I'll have. It's not a laziness thing, I love EM and want to work, it's just unfortunate this could only be done the month before boards, but I'll start studying early so that isn't too much of a problem.

If anyone has done this rotation, I'd love to hear about it, just so I have an idea of what to expect. Thanks.

Civillian Doctors

Sat, 03/13/2010 - 21:58
Hi there:

I have ofen heard that the military will supplement with civillian Drs?

If this is true, what are the requirements, and is it worthwhile to look at this as a career?

Hpsp??

Sat, 03/13/2010 - 20:53
I havent seen any recent posts about the HPSP in a while. I was wondering if anyone knows the current situation with the scholarships.

I'm applying HPSP Navy and I'm just curious as to how competitive these are, and when you usually find out if you are accepted or not, and any news/advice in general.

Pendleton question

Sat, 03/13/2010 - 19:24
I am signed up to do an ER rotation at Camp Pendleton (not my first choice by any means, but there are several reasons I ended up doing it). I'm already prepared for it to be a pretty low-acuity rotation, but I'm just wondering if anyone has experience with the ED (or any other non-FM rotations) there. Thanks

OB/GYN in San Antonio - AF or Army people - question

Sat, 03/13/2010 - 14:04
Is there anyone at BAMC or Wilford in OB/GYN that would mind posting how your program is? Happy or malignant?

I'm curious if you feel happy with the training/program/call schedule...any other info you would mind sharing?

Just trying to get an idea of the program specs...Bamc and Wilford will merge by the time I am a resident, so either Army or AF comments would be amazingly helpful.

Thanks!

National guard active duty rotations

Fri, 03/12/2010 - 14:50
Ii am in the ARNG, and I am a first year student. I have already completed my OBLC at Ft. Sam. I need to be placed on some ADT orders this summer, and every summer. Does anyone know if I am able to do a military clerkship over the summer or rotate on ADT orders my 3rd and 4th year? How do I go about this?

How can a Navy HSCP or HPSP student do a Army residency?

Fri, 03/12/2010 - 01:23
I heard that there were Navy HPSP students who enrolled at William Beaumont Army Hospital to do their general surgery residency via FTOS. Does anyone know the process for doing this?

Would this be post a Navy GME1 or straight after medschool. I know that in the Army that straight through is the norm.

Just curious. Thanx

Military Residency Accreditation

Thu, 03/11/2010 - 05:17
Does anybody know if military medicine residencies are ACGME programs, AOA programs, or are they under another certification system? Also, do military residencies look at what you got Step 1 (I'm assuming yes) and do they look at COMLEX and USMLE or just one. Excuse the ignorance if this question is ridiculous, just looking for a little basic information.

How does a normal day play out? Is it the same routine?

HPSP for a Masters?

Wed, 03/10/2010 - 18:23
Hi,
I am interested to be a Health Services Administrator in the Medical Services Corps. But I’ve been told that requires a Master’s Degree… I only have a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Care Administration.

So I wanted to ask about the Health Professions Scholarship Program, and if I could use that to get a Masters… (I haven’t applied to any Graduate Program yet), and then be a commissioned officer and experience working for the military.

Army, Navy, or Air Force?

Wed, 03/10/2010 - 18:20
I'm non-prior and currently on the waitlist at USUHS. I want to know which service is the best for me. I would like to go from USUHS to internship and then directly into a some sort of surgery residency. Which service would give me the best chance to do this without a GMO or anything else getting in the way? It would be nice to hear from people from all three services about the pros and cons of their respective service.

Navy Dermatology

I need all the info I can get.

5 spots at Balboa. 2 spots at Bethesda.

I understand you have to do GMO/FS/Dive to even be considered. Even after GMO/FS/Dive, how competitive is it? what do they look for? What about Derm as a 2nd residency after IM or FP (and this question applies to a civilian derm program too)?

Home Mortgage question

Wed, 03/10/2010 - 16:42
I will be looking to buy a house when starting active duty my questions are: I will need an official letter with salary info for the bank. Who is the one I should contact to provide this info. Also, have you generally found that banks include your bonus pay in determining your home affordability. THanks

Questions about the military medical field

Wed, 03/10/2010 - 00:39
My 12th grade English class at my high school is currently conducting research on selected occupations, and I have chosen to do my research on military physicians/surgeons as my topic and interest.

I would gladly appreciate it if you could answer these questions.
  1. I'm really interested in knowing what a typical day is in the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan.
  2. What are the usual hours?
  3. What are some current problems or issues with this field
If you could, please type what branch of the military you work in and your specific occupation too. I'm rather new to these forums so please be gentle.

Sincerely,

Navy EM Residency - hard to get?

Tue, 03/09/2010 - 20:13
How difficult is it to match Navy EM? I'm looking at their wiki site and there appear to only be 18 spots a year?

http://www.navyhpsp.net/wiki/Navy_Gr...ation_Programs

The recruiter says EM isn't very hard to match to, but looking at this and after reading about how many of them are liars, I want your thoughts.

Thanks.

Ritalin DQ

Mon, 03/08/2010 - 03:03
(Long post sorry, question at the end)

So here I am, finishing up my first year in Med School. It's been a pain in the butt, as we speak I should be reading my immunology. But this is something that has really been bugging me.

Last year, I received my acceptance letter to school, and the first thing I did was call up my local Air Force recruiter and tell him I was interested in the HPSP program. I filled out all the stupid paperwork, and when I got to the medications part I hesitated. You see, I used Ritalin my freshman year of high-school. It was prescribed for me by a family doctor in elementary school, and I just continued usage on through. Despite urgings from friends in the Army and Navy, I went ahead and filled out the forms honestly, and listed my history of usage.
The recruiter told me it shouldn't be a problem since I had a letter from a pretty respectable psychiatrist saying that I no longer needed the medication, and I had done well on my MCAT's without it.

I made it all the way through MEPS, all the humiliating, boring, and silly tests, all the way to the final quick review by the head doctor. She tells me, " I see you took Ritalin, you're disqualified without a letter of approval from a psychiatrist."
So I kindly show her my letter of approval from a psychiatrist.
"I'm afraid you are still disqualified. Please sign here."
So I asked her why I was disqualified.
"I'm afraid that you are technically mentally incompetent, and unable to serve. Now please sign here I have more people to see."
So I signed the dotted line listing me as mentally handicapped and headed on out.
I talked to the staff and my recruiter and they said if I could get the Surgeon General of the United States to sign off on my records I'd probably be ok, but otherwise to give up.
Now I have to ask this. I KNOW multiple people who are active duty armed forces for the U.S.A. currently on Methylphenidate, and it is all being PAID FOR by the military. (The Army for the particular friend I'm thinking of)
All because he was diagnosed AFTER he joined up.
All through my year here at school I have met kids who will tell me they hate America and what we stand for, but love having school paid for, so they took the HPSP scholarship.

How is it that they'll take people who hate our country, pay for people to take the same medication I'm in trouble over; but they won't take a Patriot who wants to serve his country? Heck, I'd just about waive the signing bonus if they'd just let me serve.
How do I get around this?
Any advice here?
